Black American Psycho?
A month after Kanye announced his new design company, DONDA, it looks like the first major project may be underway. A short film, similar in structure to Runaway, is set to be shot in the Persian Gulf in March. Kanye’s love of the region drove him to come up with the still unknown plot that takes place in the Gulf.
To make the film as authentic as possible, West’s creative team is moving to the region for a few weeks and local talent and production crews will be utilized. “His reps seemed genuinely enthusiastic about creating a piece which highlights the culture accurately,” a source close to the project explained. “There’s a lot of preconceived notions and stereotypes about Emiratis and Qataris, which Westerners often play up. They discussed how Kanye is looking to bridge the cultural divide and break misconceptions.” West also plans to cast some local royalty, because “many of the Sheikhs like to be flashy and appreciate celebrity notoriety.”
To further explore the idea of production, members of West’s team have met with film companies and government officials based out of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha Qatar. Kanye will have no troubles financing the film as there is a “heated bidding war” for contracts between film companies and government officials.
